Owl Pellets + the Novel Poppy + Watercolors = STEAM!

My students need owl pellets, 20 copies of the book, Poppy, and a class set of watercolors so we can mix STEM with literature and art!

My Students

I teach twenty-five happy and excited-to-learn third graders, and all day long they have fun growing and thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. Many of our students school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast.

Our school specializes in integrating art, and technology with our academic subjects.

My students learn best when I generate excitement for learning. Having a class set of the book, Poppy, will make our afternoon reading time something we will all look forward to.

My Project

This project integrates art, literature, and science. I have requested 20 copies of the novel, Poppy, by Avi. This story is a great tale about a tiny deer mouse who must lead her family to a better life far away from a great horned owl, Mr. Ocax. My students will love this engaging story, which will tie into our studies of food chains, immigration, and animal adaptations. My students will write and act out dialogue between Poppy and her family members as they strategize how to safely leave their home.

I have requested owl pellets which my students will dissect to have a hands-on STEM experience as they learn about the different animals the owl ate that are in the pellets.

I have also requested a class set of watercolor kits so my students can paint an owl against the night sky and write some poetry to go along with the image. Working with watercolors is a wonderful way to experiment with color blending and pastel imagery.
