My students need 3 owl pellet kits for an activity done in the fall Ecology unit in our Living Environment course.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Stergio's classroom raised $274

My Students
Do you remember studying about food chains and food webs in school? I would like to give my students the opportunity to create their own food webs based on what they find in real owl pellets!
My students are ninth graders from a high school in New York.
We are one of the few larger schools that are left in still functioning in the city. Most of our students are coming from poorer school districts here. I try to have memorable learning experiences in the science classroom in order to keep their attendance up as well as turning them away from the idea that science is boring and impossible for them to master and enjoy.
My Project
I have done this activity with my students the past two years during the Ecology unit. It is a lot of fun for them and a way to really get to see and deduce how a food web could be composed.
Most of our kids are from the urban environment and are so surprised and amazed by the idea of an owl pellet. Some are absolutely "skeeved" out by it, but once we discuss what it is they come around and are excited about the activity.
An owl pellet is an undigested particle of food that is regurgitated by the owl. It includes bones and hair of its prey. Although we never see the owl eat its prey, students learn how scientists infer information from their observations.
I would really like to have these resources before the school year begins.
I wasn't able to do this activity until after the Ecology unit was over because of the funding issues in our school. I felt that the activity could have been so much more if we did it when we learned about food webs.
I feel that this can get the students' scientific minds working as well as giving them a fun and memorable learning experience in the beginning of their high school careers.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
