This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school students live in a high-poverty area that has mainly Spanish speaking families. Most come from large families with several students in different grade levels at multiple schools. We also have many military families.
Most of our students' families have been born and raised in this area so they have a deep and meaningful history in our school district.
Our students deserve the best education we can offer them and sometimes that means having to go outside for help for items the district can't provide.
My Project
These owl pellets will bring students and parents or guardians together for a fun night of dissection and learning. I love to bring students and parents into class together for science fun. Dissecting owl pellets is like treasure hunting with tweezers and a bone chart. The excitement of the families working together is fun to watch and getting to know families during a fun event leads to better class relations all the way around. Bringing families together in class for a good reason rather than a meeting over something more serious is a lot more enjoyable for both parents and teachers and the students get to know the teacher and their own parents in a different way. I’ve always loved watching kids watch their parents diving into dissecting owl pellets like a little kid themselves it’s very for filling!
