My Students
My students come from low-income and working class families and are part of a long tradition of hard work and learning. Most of them have part time jobs after school, and what little they have, has not come easy to them.
Our school is the oldest and most crowded high school in the city.
Many of my students' parents and grandparents attended this very same school. Even with hardships, they have kind generous hearts. Most of them really need support, so I give them all I've got. They are willing to work hard for me in spite of my corny science jokes because they know that I believe in them!
My Project
As part of our Ecology unit study this year, my Biology students will be dissecting owl pellets. Owl pellets are the bone and fur remains of owl's prey that are coughed up by the owl after being partially digested.
My students will get to identify and carefully reconstruct skeletons of owl prey that they obtain from owl pellets.
The owl pellet dissection labs allow my students to combine their knowledge of ecology, food chains, adaptations, dichotomous keys, and homologous structures into an amazing lab activity that lasts for several class periods.
This unit is one of my students' favorites, and gives them the opportunity to apply some real hands-on life science skills. We also need a few basic lab supplies like some standard sized beakers. It's not in the budget this year to carry out this activity without some assistance, so you could help make this dream come true, and give my students a lab opportunity that they will never forget!
