My students need 50 owl pellets to discover animal adaptations via dissection.

My Students
Third grade students benefit greatly from experiential discoveries. Owl pellet dissections will lead to deeper understandings of prey/predator relationships and the specific adaptions owls have for survival. My students need relevant hands-on activities to connect integrated curriculum.
Our school is a K-8 rural school in central California with a student population of 500.
We have over 50% of our children on free and reduced lunch. We have no immediate buildings around our campus. We are surrounded by woods and cow fields. All the students must ride the bus to come to school. Our student population is predominantly white with less than 20% ESL, and those students most are Hispanic. Our students work hard and continue to strive for success.
My Project
My students need owl pellets to really bring home my integrated science adaptations/literature investigation. No better way to learn than hands-on application of what we are studying. Students will love dissecting the owl pellets and seeing the web of life first hand. Students will open each foil wrapped pellet with varying amounts of anticipation and be introduced to lab procedures and scientific tools. Some will be in awe, some will be wary. Either way we will continue to dissect and categorize bone fragments. This is one project that students will remember from their grammar school years. What better way to cement learning and memories than to make a hands-on project from which students can learn.
By creating experiences in the classroom that have substance, I can integrate writing with the scientific process.
The Common Core Standards require, and rightfully so, the integration of reading, writing, and science. This type of activity is critical to that goal. My educational goals for my students will serve them well in any career they choose.
