Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a traditional middle school in an urban district, and the school has recently been in turn-around status. The students at the school are about 90% minority, and over 80% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In addition, around 40% of the students are classified as English Language Learners. My students need to see themselves as STEM masters so that they choose a career in STEM. The U.S. needs more STEM graduates and especially STEM graduates that look like my students!

My students are a diverse, curious, inventive, and energetic group of 7th graders, in a large comprehensive middle school, in Denver.

They take great pride in their school and are proud of their accomplishments. They enjoy hands-on learning and are delighted when I can infuse technology and experiments into a lesson. If given the opportunity to try different activities and to experience material from interdisciplinary lessons, these students can achieve great results!

My Project

Students need to understand how to trace the flow of energy from the sun to consumers, and dissecting owl pellets is an engaging, hands-on approach to doing so! Owls usually swallow their food whole and digest only parts- the other parts they eject through their mouths in the forms of pellets. Students love rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty, and ALL want the chance to participate! Imagine the engagement level if each child had his/her own pellet to dissect! Students will dissect the pellets, match bones to common owl prey, collect, record, and graph their data, and understand how energy stored in food is passed through a food chain.
