Learning about owls is a hoot! My classes are very interested in science, especially owls. My science class has a tradition of dissecting owl pellets every year. Students from many years still remember the first time they dissected an owl pellet in my class. Science is a hoot!
My students live in a rural area and many come from low-poverty homes.
Our school does not have many resources for science. Science captivates their love for learning. My students need hands-on materials to explore the world around them. They are younger students who love to learn.
My Project
I teach three classes of K-2 students. I am requesting four classroom sets of owl pellets so that each student can participate in this "famous" activity in my science class. We will dissect the owl pellets, after a unit on owls. Owl ornaments will decorate our classroom Christmas tree and we will end 2012 with the best lesson on the year...owl dissection!
I have done this activity with my students for the past four years.
This experiment is famous around our school. I still have students from years ago that ask me about owls. Every year, this experiment sparks a child's love for science. Whoooo loves owls? We do!
