My Students

Every morning we begin our day with our class pledge. "I believe in myself and my ability to do my best. I am intelligent. I am capable of greatness. I can learn. I will learn. I must learn today. I am too smart to waste today."

My school is a third year turnaround school on Chicago's West Side.

A turnaround school is a chronically underperforming school that is chosen to begin a year with new leaders, teachers and staff to provide students more opportunities now and in the future. In 2014, 52% of the students at my school did not have permanent homes or adequate housing. This means that many of my little ones will not be able to afford basic school supplies at the beginning of the year. Despite this discouraging statistic, more than half of my students entered second grade at or above grade level in both reading and math. My students have an insatiable appetite for knowledge and love being at school.

My Project

This new rug has large personal squares that comfortably seats 30 students. Our current rug is more suitable for preschool to kindergarten students as they are smaller and the rectangles are also small and seats up to 25 students. I have 22 (and counting) rapidly growing 8 year-olds. We meet on our rug as a community to recite our class pledge, share important announcements, and learn and practice new skills during our lessons. I am able to model and demonstrate new skills at our rug in a way that all students can see and participate. A majority of our social and emotional learning happens on the rug during community building activities between lessons and books read aloud for discussion. Students also use this space to read independently.

The rug is one of the most important spaces in our classroom.

It is a space that allows us to learn as a community. Your donation will provide my students the opportunity to learn in a classroom that allows them to be mentally present as well as physically present.
