This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are group of energetic, loving, smart 6 and 7 year olds! They love learning something new and get excited about our various units of study in all subject areas. My class is 80% African American, 10% Caucasian, and 10% biracial with most in low-income households.
Building gross motor skills and free outdoor play are essential components of early childhood education!
As all children do, our 1st graders enjoy recess time with their friends. It is a way for them to socialize, problem-solve, create, and grow!
My Project
Our students have a small courtyard area for free play/recess time. We currently have very limited materials for them to use at recess, and most are old, worn-out or broken. These new materials would provide a new energy at recess and bring our students endless days of joy!
These materials, games and toys will allow for further development of social skills, problem-solving, team-work, creativity, and gross motor development.
Because of our limited space, the majority of the area is concrete/sidewalk. These materials would allow them to maximize the use of the space we have and enjoy their free time with friends!
The materials include sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, scooters, balance boards, hula hooks, skip and hop ankle hoops, ball pump, and storage containers. The courtyard playground is used by PreK-1st grade, so this would impact 3 grade levels of students for many years to come!
