Help me give my students what they need to enjoy Outdoor Learning in Wisconsin. Individual totes, mittens, warm socks, art supplies and writing boards for journaling to keep children engaged in learning.
It is my joy as a Kindergarten teacher to create a learning opportunity every week that allows for success and learning. In this project we have asked for everything our students need to enjoy Outdoor Learning every Friday. No matter what the weather, hot-cold or anything in between, my students get to enjoy the educational equalizer of hands on experience in nature. They all get to be curious, engaged explorers of the world. Through observation, journaling, games and exploration we learn about local animals and birds as well as topics like conservation, phenology and stewardship of being in nature. We delve into gratitude and mindfulness all from the small garden at our school or near by local nature spaces and parks.
However in order to enjoy and succeed in this great adventure, we need to ensure that children have what they need to be comfortable outside.
This includes tote bags to organize their Outdoor Learning Materials and gain independence with getting themselves ready as well as socks and mittens to ensure warmth in the long winter in Wisconsin. you will also see art supplies like water colors and play dough. We use these materials to enhance our journaling and allow for hands on modeling and creation of the learning. (Topics like animal scat, life cycles etc are especially fun to create with modeling materials).
Finally, additional manipulatives to ensure that all students, especially those with Special education needs have what they need to be comfortable supporting our learners and teachers outdoors as well.
Being outdoors allows for every child to actively engage in nature stories and learning, a deep connection to the land we live on and be in a space that welcomes all no matter where you come from and reminds us that we are part of something bigger.
