Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very young children with special needs, most of whom have speech delays and/or autism. They are the most lovable bunch of sweethearts trying their best to communicate their thoughts and ideas. I strive to provide a social skills-based preschool program that is saturated with language opportunities whenever and wherever possible. Through the use of play, and modeling appropriate language, encouraging children to use their words, and practicing social skills, the children in my class can learn about themselves and the world around them.

My Project

Our program is in the process of building an outdoor classroom around the same space as our garden. Our garden currently has 4 garden beds and some garden tools. We have had the pleasure of growing broccoli, tomatoes, sweet peas, radishes, squash and are in the process of attempting to grow watermelon and pumpkins. Watching the children become excited about what they are working together to grow is a sight to be seen! Students with and without special needs have expressed their love for the garden and the process of growing living things. It is clear that learning outside, getting our hands dirty, and experiencing feeling proud about something they have worked together to nurture is life changing for my students.

The most important lessons we can provide our students with is the opportunity to learn about how to care for their planet.

Learning about science through the exploration of our natural environment gives students a hands-on introduction to sustainability. Creating an outdoor classroom will give our school the space needed in order to dive into deeper content when working in our garden!
