Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from Puerto Rico, Russia, Ukraine, The Dominican Republic, Columbia, Bangladesh, Mexico – lands far and wide. Some are pushed by the fear of violence, some are pulled in the hopes of seeking a better life for their children. Most arrive to double and triple up with family members. The children don’t understand why they were pulled from their home, their friends, their pets. They only know they are in a foreign place, seeing foreign sights and hearing a language they don’t understand. These are my students.
My students may be from different places, but they all have one thing in common; they are typical teenagers.
They want to fit in. They want to be accepted. They want to make friends. One strives to become a doctor, the next a police officer, another a teacher. Like all teenagers, my students have dreams. My role is to help them see the possibility of achieving their dreams.
My Project
This Scholastic magazine series is specifically targeted for students like mine. It contains articles and pictures which appeal to teenagers, but is written at a lower reading level. The magazine also targets specific skill sets such as grammar and new vocabulary in an engaging way. This is perfect for my students. I'm an English as a New Language teacher in a low income middle/high school in the Bronx. Like many school districts, we are feeling the effects of years of budget cuts. We are also doing our best to learn remotely. Your kind help will allow my students to receive a digital subscription to age appropriate reading material that is engaging and interactive.
As a teacher, I know that the middle and high school years are "the make or break years." People say that this is the hardest age- I say that this is the most exciting.
However, I also know that these are the years where we "lose" students. Most English Language Learners who eventually drop out are those who are frustrated and exhausted from trying to comprehend English while also navigating content. With your help, we might just be able to convince one or two to stay in school. Thank you.
