This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you." --B.B. King
My students are English Language Learners at an inner-city elementary school where 95% are high-needs with 90% of students on free and reduced lunch.
They are in grades one and four. These children are curious, funny, and hard-working. Many of them need assistance in the areas of reading and writing.
My Project
My students need blank books to become expert authors on two topics: space (grade 4) and zoo animals (grade 1). They will be researching their topics to create their own books on space and zoo animals. They will be creating these books for buddy classrooms in various grades because of the variance in reading levels present in our classrooms. They will produce these books by going through the stages of the writing process and celebrating by publishing and reading them aloud.
Giving my students authentic books, I believe, will have them more invested in and excited about the project.
When they are excited, they work harder, and writing is an area of difficulty for them. My students will also be able to take this product home with them to keep in their libraries for years to come.
