Out of the Book - Onto the Whiteboard 2

My students need Interactive Whiteboard Lessons for Earth's Surface, Earth's Atmosphere and Weather, and our Solar System.

My Students

I teach 6th and 7th grade science at a large Illinois elementary school. My students are from low income families and all are eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for discovery and inquiry in my students.

Unfortunately, our science textbooks are outdated and not very motivating to my students.

In addition, because of drastic cuts in our school budget, we are unable to purchase science resources. In addition to budget cuts, we were told by the school board to expect classes of 35 or more students, further cutting into our meager resources. Most of my students do not have computers with Internet access at home, or parents to take them to the library. I would love to be able to have an interactive learning aid that would allow me to teach my students about Earth Science.

My Project

I will be very thankful if you are able to fund my grant for (1) Whiteboard Lesson for our Solar System (with these resources my students will be able to explain the formation of our solar system, describe geocentric and heliocentric systems, gain knowledge of the inner and outer planets, comets, asteroids and meteors); (1) Whiteboard Lesson for Earth's Surface (information will be gained on weathering and erosion, mechanical weathering, chemical weathering, cycle of erosion and deposition); and, (1) Whiteboard Lesson for Atmosphere and Weather. These lessons will help my students understand weather factors, clouds, weather patterns and how to predict the weather. Using these lessons, I will be able to take my students out of their books and into an engaging interactive, visual component. My students will be able to take the role of a geologist, archaeologist, meteorologist, and astronomer. Small groups will be able to make presentations and teach lessons to their classmates.

This project is also important because minorities and women are underrepresented in the field of science.

By introducing my students to fascinating fields of science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day, they will become scientists themselves. My students and I will be greatly appreciative if you are able to fund our project!
