This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the start of the school year, my seventh grade Health students spend a lot of time trying to figure out who they are. Our curriculum is all about change, tolerance, empathy, and choice. My students have many challenges in their lives and I want them to see that anything is possible.

My seventh grade students attend a large, public middle school in the San Fernando Valley.

We are school-wide Title I, which means one hundred percent of our students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. Many of my students are reluctant readers, but when it is a whole class activity, even the most reluctant will join in.

My Project

One great novel can be the gateway for a student to keep on reading. This novel, 'Out of my Mind", has so many messages that are important to my students - empathy, finding your unique voice, tolerance, perseverance, love for your self and the value all of us have to improve our lives. I want to share this with my students in the hopes that they will carry these messages throughout their days.

I want my students to have a positive experience reading a novel, but more than that, I want my students to meet a character with whom they share some traits.

Melody deals with judgments and assumptions. I want my students to find and nurture their true selves. I want them to be accepting of others and be inspired to make positive changes for themselves and for their school and community.
