Out Of My Comfort Zone To Create And Inspire

My Students

As a high school English teacher of 25 years, I have taught a lot of Shakespeare plays to a lot of teenagers and I'm still teaching Bard’s works to them today. Some of my students are a challenge and some are a success, but it's always the same at the beginning of the lesson on William Shakespeare. Students think of Shakespeare as an old man who couldn't possibly connect to them or their lifestyles today. They don’t get that through his manipulation of words characters live and fell the same events and emotions as they do today.

However, I have seen the spark in my student’s eyes when the light comes on and they read the words on the page with recognition of the feelings of love (some requited some not), fear, jealousy, etc.

That is what keeps me going and if I can improve my style of teaching to help them grow and gain a new perspective for further thought and self-awareness, for me that is a summer well spent.

My Project

This Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance program at The Globe Theater in London, England will allow me to go outside my comfort zone with a topic that in my classroom I am usually very comfortable with. Getting the chance to work with professional educators, artists, and researchers as I find a relationship between actor and audience can help me develop a better relationship with students in my classroom.

Working with the Globe Theatre professionals will help me to hone my teaching and creative skills in presentation and lesson planning so as to help my teenage students fully engage in learning and discovery of how the English language can be beautifully manipulated to have a lasting effect.

Once I experience this I will be able to help my students see that stepping out of one’s comfort zone and taking designed risks may increase the possibility of extraordinary growth not only in the knowledge of content but also in knowledge of self and allow us all to grow not only academically, but also personally.
