Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some know four languages. Some have learning disabilities that affect speech and language, fine and gross motor, and social-emotional abilities.
All have diverse learning experiences and the teachers on our grade level want to ensure that all of our students have equal access to learning basic concepts in literacy, science, writing, and other academic areas.
We want them to ask questions, ones that lead to more questions to make them explore and wonder, and grow as learners. To encourage them to to become active learners, we want to promote meeting Positive Behavior Intervention System expectations through tangible acknowledgements. Towards that end, I want to be able to get our students books, educational games, and incentives for staying positive and productive during this difficult time.
Moreover, to meet the needs of our most at-risk students, resources that encourage a love of learning are a huge necessity.
My Project
My second graders are starting to immerse themselves in nonfiction, noticing the features of informational texts. They need enough leveled texts to access information in study groups. Completing this project’s goals would mean they could each choose topics to research and write about to teach others what they have learned. Empowering them in this way will whelp strengthen their comprehension, analytical and writing skills, and prepare them for other genres, such as opinion-writing, when evidence from the text is required to support opinions. Having engaging books will help them grow.
