My Project
In our Creative Writing Conservatory - the only one of its kind in Chicago's public schools - we dream of seeing our words and stories in print. Help us make our dream a reality by giving us the tools we need to bring the press in-house and publish ourselves!
Students will explore the self-publishing world by creating their own collections of poetry or prose from start to finish—covering everything from developing the content to design, layout, and binding.
We will learn the basics of book-making with the traditional tools of the craft, including high-quality bone paper folders, needles, waxed thread and awls, and heavyweight paper that will lend a gravity and seriousness to the project that these students' brilliant work deserves. In addition, having a high quality scanner and printer will allow my students to use a wide array of digital tools to compliment and elevate the analog ones-- and even create multiple copies or short runs of the collections to distribute-- just like a publishing house would!
