Our Wall of Love: Inspirational Ceramic Tile Mural

My students need special tools, ceramic supplies, and a camera for documentation to create an inspirational ceramic mural installation for our re-built school.

My Students

What can comfort our young students and staff as they return to our rebuilt school following a devastating F4 tornado? A ceramic tile mosaic mural that they each had a hand in creating! They'll eagerly search for their (and their friends' and teacher's)piece of our permanent creation.

My elementary (pre-K through 6th grade) art students live in a rural southern Indiana community that already had many families in need of financial and lunch programs.

Our school was the center and heart of our community. After the tornadoes hit our school on March 2, besides the tremendous devastation to the structures and homes, many of our students were displaced to families and friends beyond our community and every child's sense of norm and support changed. Each child in our school brought a special personality and energy to school and created an exciting mix of young creative minds. They are always full of hugs for me and constantly greeting me in the halls when they saw me outside of art class. For the students that are able to return to finish our school year at our temporary school, much internal healing needs to be handled with care because they will be very fragile and traumatized. Many are very eager to return to see their friends and teachers.

My Project

The special tools (tile nippers and tile stackers) and materials (glaze, tiles, adhesive) will aid us in creating and installing our wall mural into our repaired school for opening day. The camera will help me document the process from beginning to end. Each student will express their creativity on a ceramic tile with glaze that will be re-fired and brought together into one overall thematic design expressing our school family pride and sense of love and perseverance that brings us back together to our home school. This mural will be an everyday visual and tactile reminder of what we survived together with each name to be searched for and found on each tile. They can feel the texture of the textured glazes and learn how ART can heal the heart and give our minds a creative positive avenue of expression. Installation will involve volunteer parent and staff participation to increase the value beyond just our students.

This project will also become a meaningful, emotional piece of our school's history that can be revisited by family, community, staff and students years from now (It will document the date and time of the tornado) and show the list of people and organizations that helped make the project possible.

Without your help, this project is beyond the financial means of our school. Even beyond this request, more tiles and glazes will be searched out to support the large number of children involved.
