Our Trip to Release Our Trout Into Nature

My students need a bus to take them to the river in upstate NY to release their fingerling trout.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Lee's classroom raised $1,290

My Students

Children see fish in tanks and the aquarium. They love pointing out the fish that they see. I would like my students to learn how trout grow by raising them from eggs in the classroom.

My students are young and inquisitive.

Students in my classroom have raised chickens, hamsters, rabbits, beta fish and hermit crabs. This year my students will be learning how to raise trout eggs in the classroom. We will be learning how to keep our aquarium to the ideal conditions for trout to grow. We have been raising trout in our classroom from eggs. My students have been able to watch the trout eggs hatch and grow over the course of the school year. They have been so excited to see the slow change in their "class pets". They know that as they get older, they will be released into the river in upstate NY. I know that my students will be so excited to see their fingerling trout being released into the river in Westchester in late April.

My Project

While we are there, my students will be able to see the microorganisms and plants that grow in the rivers to help it thrive. They will be examining the contents of the river and really getting to explore nature, which is hard to do in the busy streets of NYC. The charter bus that I am requesting will help to get my students and their parents to the river in Westchester to release the trout. We will not have to worry about students requesting the bathroom, as there will be one on the bus. But most importantly, everyone will be comfortable! Imagine a very long ride with children asking are we their yet, times 18!

The final part of our Trout in the Classroom project will allow my students to watch as their "class pets" are released into its natural habitat and swim away.

They will also get to "get-in tune" with nature as we explore plants and micro-organisms that grow along the riverbeds. How many city kids can say that they released trout into the stream and watch as they swim away? This is my goal for my students with this yearlong Trout in the Classroom project.
