Our Sweet Home - a Celebration of Dirt!

Help me give my students a clipboard, SOIL HORIZONS, and materials needed to comprehend what dirt is actually made up of and how valuable it is to our society at a fun event that will be held outside.

My Students

Our students come from Title I public elementary schools in rural southeast Alabama. Our fourth graders across the county will come together at our school for a fun day of learning outside the classroom. They're all a very bright bunch of fourth grade students and are eager to learn. The students in our county live around farms, crops, tractor equipment, and livestock.

It is imperative that we educate our students that the products they use daily come from the soil below their feet.

Giving this opportunity to the students in our county will enrich their background knowledge of soil and the importance it plays in our lives. Students will understand how soil impacts local agriculture and how it relates to the local economy. This will ensure the growth and development of Alabama and our wonderful country.

My Project

This year marks the 200th birthday of our great state, and we want to celebrate Alabama’s rich history alongside “Dirt Day” at our school. Our mission is to create a fun, hands-on day of educational activities to introduce the students in our county to the properties of soil. Soil is one of the most important resources on Earth, and the students will gain knowledge and understand how valuable the foundation of our food supply is.

It is our goal that all students enjoy the activities outside of the classroom and learn that soil is not just dirt!

The students will also enrich their knowledge of Alabama by exploring the history of farming and crop production. We are planning for five science stations and five Alabama History stations. We want it to resemble a “Farm Expo”.

The stations will require all 200 students having a clipboard to walk around with outside to hold down their papers as we learn and work outside. We are also in need of paper to make the layers of the soil fold-able and the dirt art activity. The paint and paint brushes would accommodate classes of 20 at a time. The Soil Horizons Biorama would be an amazing visual for the students to get a glimpse of the soil beneath our feet. We need clear cups with lids to make a mini version of the layers of the soil for the students to take home. We will also have the “favorite” edible soil layer cup using pudding and other fun materials that we would need assistance purchasing such as the cups, shovel spoons, and candy worms.

These materials will make a difference because it will give the students a more hands on approach to learning. The students will be able to use all their senses learning about dirt.
