Our Student's Senses Are Tingling....

Help me give my students a Sensory Corner in my classroom so that I can create a space where students can go to process their thoughts and emotions, or distract themselves from sensory overload.

My Project

By implementing a Sensory Corner in my 6th-8th grade Social Studies and Advisory Classrooms, students can begin to regulate their own emotions, energy levels, and behaviors. This can help them learn to focus and be more prepared to learn and interact with others. We will use the rug and bean bag chair to aide us in the process of self-regulation and emotional maturity. In addition, a Sensory Corner can help students improve their visual, auditory, and tactile processing while also helping students transition between tasks and warm up activities. Furthermore, a Sensory Corner can be tailored to meet the specific needs of individual students while simultaneously teaching students Independence through taking responsibility for keeping their area clean and structured.

My students are special because they come from marginalized communities in New York City that can benefit from a resource that is not readily available to them.

85% of my student population receive Free Lunch and and their households often have depressed Income levels that prevent them from utilizing resources such as Sensory rooms/corners to aid them in their emotional development. As Middle School students, the benefits of a Sensory corner in classrooms can create a space where younger users can go to process their thoughts and emotions, or distract themselves from sensory overload. This makes the sensory corner a safe space where they can do whatever they need to feel better while having some privacy and the continued development of their self-monitoring skills.
