Our Students Give a Hoot!

Help me give my students 'Hoot' to learn about the delicate balance of ecosystems and enhance their reading skills!

My Project

My students are curious, imaginative, and eager to make connections between what they read and the world around them. To spark both a love of reading and an awareness of environmental conservation, I’m seeking a class set of the novel Hoot by Carl Hiaasen.

Hoot is more than just a great story—it’s an engaging and accessible way to introduce students to the delicate balance of ecosystems and the real-world consequences of human impact on the environment.

Through the lens of relatable characters and a compelling narrative, students will explore themes of activism, justice, and ecological preservation.

This book will support our work with the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) for fiction, as students analyze character development, plot structure, and theme, while also learning to cite evidence and build interpretive skills. Additionally, it aligns with our science curriculum, making cross-curricular connections that deepen understanding and relevance.

With your support, each student will have their own copy of Hoot to annotate, engage with, and truly make their own. This project will not only improve literacy but also inspire students to think critically about their role in protecting our planet.

Help us bring this meaningful reading experience to life and plant the seeds of environmental stewardship in our classroom!
