Our Stories, Our Voices: A Library of Representation

Help me give my students graphic novels that reflect their identities and introduce them to diverse cultures, including stories by underrepresented authors and books about Indigenous Peoples.

My Project

My students attend a Title I school where resources are limited, but their enthusiasm for reading is limitless. Most of my students are Hispanic, with a significant number of African American students, and they deserve to see themselves and their communities reflected in the books they read. They also deserve opportunities to learn about the richness and variety of cultures around the world.

The graphic novels in this project feature characters and stories from voices that are often missing from traditional classroom libraries—Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian American, and LGBTQ+ authors and protagonists.

These books will help validate and celebrate my students’ lived experiences while also expanding their understanding of others.

Included in this project are also sets of books that explore the lives, histories, and traditions of various Indigenous Peoples, both past and present. These texts will help students think critically, appreciate multiple perspectives, and build empathy and respect for cultures different from their own.

By supporting this project, you’ll help me create a more inclusive, engaging, and culturally responsive classroom library where every student feels seen, valued, and inspired. Thank you for helping build a love of reading and a more just and connected world for my students.
