Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are natural-born scientists and explorers. They just don't know it yet! They are inquisitive, they want to learn, they're analytical, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning and truth, share their own stories, and become agents of change to make the world a more verdant place. And it is my job to facilitate and give them access to the knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers and purpose they seek. We, like many public schools, struggle with purchasing new supplies, especially technology, and we must then rely on your generosity to fill in the financial and ultimately learning gaps that allow us to get the technology, experiences, and opportunities our students need to grow into passionate academics and global citizens.

My Project

For years my colleagues and I have taught elements of equity, race studies and LGBTQ issues nestled among our curricula, or through our local GSA or some other club... but the time has now come to explicitly and intentionally have honest, uncomfortable, student-centered conversations about the issues that have become so neglected and so minimized in most schools. Students and teachers crave open and genuine discussions around LGBTQ, black and latinx-studies, exposing injustices, talking about race and whiteness and combating privilege, classism and elitism. I recently was part of a local program called the Sustainable School Communities and after 3 days of wonderful conversations between our school and others like us, with teachers, admin and students- it is time to commit to make this work permanent and front-center in our building for our students (and many adults).

The time and moment is now to allow students access to books written and featuring black and latinx characters, books that embrace and cultivate, educate and illuminate LGBTQ role models, celebrate differences in all people and introduced students (and adults) to indigenous study issues and begin the uncomfortable discussions that will lead to healing and growth in our schools- that we haven't had before.

I hope that through your donations these books will be the VERY BEGINNING of this journey. A colleague and I have been discussing the possibility of opening a conversation circle or her idea was to create an equity/diversity club, allowing students, teachers, and parents to take these books, make them their own and keep them, read them and learn from them, their authors, characters and the conversations we hope to have. In the end, we hope to create our own story and aim for change in our school community.
