My Students

Basic supplies in most primary classes are crayons, pencils, notebook paper, and erasers. Not in our class! We are a unique group of learners that require specific materials that allow our classroom to function smoothly!

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Due to low enrollment and changes within our school district, our school was one step away from being closed last year. Despite the challenges that my students face, they are incredibly resilient. The seven students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, desire to learn, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

We are requesting materials that are vital to the functioning of our small classroom. Velcro and magnetic tape are our "pencils". Many of my students cannot write yet, but are still working on the same skills that a child may work on if they were using paper and pencils. Velcro and magnet tape help students to complete activities such as match answers and learn to spell their name using manipulatives rather than writing utensils. Playdough and kids tweezers are so helpful to for our students to build fine motor dexterity so that soon, they WILL be able to write! We are also requesting a science/social studies magazine subscription from Scholastic. We have a hard time accessing these subjects because general education curriculum is often not functional enough for our students to access. These monthly issues will help us to make these subjects real and applicable to our unique classroom of excited learners!

Unfortunately, the materials that our classroom needs to function are very expensive - but our students deserve the best.

Please help us to access our basic needs as a public school and give my students the education that they deserve!
