Our Soundtrack: Culture, Rhythm, and Beats

Help me give my students the instruments, tools, and cultural experiences they need to explore their identity, express themselves through music, and celebrate the rich rhythms of the world.

My Project

I love how curious, creative, and full of life my students are. The 3rd through 5th graders at our elementary school come from beautifully diverse backgrounds, and they bring so much culture, rhythm, and spirit into our classroom. Many of them haven't had the chance to see themselves reflected in the music they learn, and I want to change that.

These resources will give my students access to instruments and tools that reflect the richness of their identities.

The tubano drums, shakers, and shekeres will allow them to experience the joy of African, Latinx, and global rhythms firsthand. The dry-erase rhythm boards will help us collaborate and compose our own music. The Bluetooth speaker and headphones will let students listen to music from across the world and create their own beats using apps like Chrome Music Lab or GarageBand.

Most of all, this project will empower my students to be proud of who they are, to connect with their heritage, and to express themselves through music. They won't just learn about the world — they'll hear themselves in it.
