Our Calm Down Area serves as a safe harbor where students can retreat when feeling overwhelmed.
This designated space acknowledges that all emotions are valid and provides students with the opportunity to process their feelings constructively. By offering this space, we communicate to our students that taking time to address emotional needs is not just acceptable but encouraged.
These squeezable tools provide proprioceptive input through the hands, which can help release tension and redirect nervous energy. When a student feels angry or frustrated, the physical action of squeezing helps release emotional pressure in a safe way.
These manipulatives offer visual and tactile stimulation that can help students focus their attention away from distressing thoughts. The repetitive motion creates a calming rhythm that many students find soothing when feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
Items with different textures such as bumpy stress balls, soft fabric squares, and ribbed fidget toys engage the tactile sensory system. For students who seek sensory input, these items can provide grounding sensations that help them reconnect with their surroundings when emotions feel too big.
