This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of an urban 9-12 secondary school in California. My over arching literary objectives are to improve my students' literacy scores on standardized tests (currently 71% have not yet demonstrated mastery on the Reading portion of our state's yearly assessment), bolster their reading fluency and comprehension, and inspire them to become life-long readers. Some of my students are already voracious readers and I want to continue to nourish their zeal. However, others do not enjoy reading and/or struggle with it. It is my hope that continuing to stock the school library with compelling, user-friendly, relevant books will encourage those who detest and/or have difficulty with reading to pick up a book as well as those who have already discovered the magic of written words.

My Project

My number one objective as the librarian at my gigantic urban high school is to inspire a rich reading culture on campus. It is my hope that providing compelling novels at a variety of reading levels (to accommodate everyone: my second language learners, my students in special education, and my competent readers), in various genres (mystery, horror, fantasy, science fiction, non-fiction, realistic, historical fiction, romance, graphic novels, etc...), about relevant topics (engaging biographies, ancient history, current events, technology, etc....) will encourage my students to read...both my voracious readers and my students who have not yet discovered the magic and joy of reading.
