My Project

Hi everyone! My name is Caitlyn Medina and this year will be my second year as a school counselor. During my first year I focused on gathering the basic materials that will would help build my school counseling program. I have learned many things while being the only school counselor for about 500 elementary students. One of the main reflections I had was that I do not have sufficient books that represent my students' SEL needs and their identities.

My main goal is to start building a school counseling library that my students will relate to.

Most of the items on the list have been collected from comprehensive booklists that ensure diversity. I gathered these materials from websites including socialjusticebooks.org and the conciouskid.org.

At our school we take care of ourselves, take care of others, and take care of our place. Students here understand the importance of taking care of their social emotional needs as well as being a responsible and kind community member. The books on this list will reinforce these core beliefs by engaging students in lessons that they can relate to and generalize.
