This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is in North Philadelphia. We are a pre-K to 8th grade public elementary school with a large population of English Language Learners.
WM Elementary has 20 beginning English Language Learners (from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Yemen) in grades 4-8 who receive support in a small group setting.
We focus on listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. One of our favorite activities is to record ourselves while reading leveled library books.
My Project
We are using a web-based intervention program called Imagine Learning. The program is designed to record the students reading. Their recordings are archived so that their reading progress can be monitored.
In order to make high quality recordings, we are in need of headphones with built-in microphones.
We can also use the microphones to record skits using Photo Booth. We have written skits based on our reading and writing topics. Some of our skits this year have been about fire safety, beavers' habitat, and boats. After we use the microphones to make the recordings, we can share the videos with other classrooms!
