My Students
"Are you ready to learn something new today Tigers?" is what I always ask my reading, language arts, and writing students every day. They always answer with a resounding "Yes we are!" as they enter my class.
My school has a high number of students who are first-generation Haitian-American immigrants.
Although they come from impoverished homes, they are rich in resilience, love, and hope.
Many of them come from homes that were affected by Hurricane Irma, so basic amenities that they need to prosper are not always readily available to them.
Even though we have to cater for and adapt to such a wide range of learning needs, we know that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology (and teachers who care). As their teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences.
My Project
I am currently one of three third-grade reading teachers, and one of my main responsibilities is to introduce new strategies using technology that target the "close" reading process. Also, I am expected to expose my students to the most current research-based reading strategies, in order to improve my students' reading skills and learning gains. Every day, my students break out into centers, but not all get to use a computer as I only have five stations in my classroom. Some students may only get to use the computer once a week, which is not enough.
The overall reading skills of my students will be built and enhanced by the use of the requested Chromebooks, as they are moving in a tech-savvy direction.
Our school is also in the process of being a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) designated school; therefore, exposing my students to new technological advances using the Chromebook will also put them at a great advantage.
