My Students
In a school of 1200 kids, but consisting of only 300 boys, finding boys with a passion for baseball isn't the easiest. For the ones that are interested, finding sufficient equipment is the next challenge. With no funding from the state, and many of the students coming from lower socioeconomic homes, we are forced to fundraise in order to get simple luxuries like team helmets and team bats.
Yet, we are able to not only compete, but to thrive.
On a field shared with 4 other teams, forced to sprint after school in order to play on the infield, we are able to thrive. Even though the field we are sprinting to does not have a mound, or any grass in the infield, or even a drainage system, with the uneven dirt dipping into the middle, we are able to thrive.
We have made the playoff four years in a row, and are two years removed from being in the semi finals all due to the strength and resilience of the players. In a school so highly ranked for its academic success, we are still able to thrive.
My Project
As a team from a small school made up of mostly girls, the boys' baseball team does not receive any funding from our school. However, it is necessary for us to receive funding to purchase new equipment because we are a school with a large number of low-income students and do not have our own "home field" which makes it imperative for us to purchase valuable equipment to use in our many unavoidable indoor practices. New and more durable gear will enable us to have better practices and allow us to play to our ability and continue to compete with bigger schools. Hitting equipment and practice balls are among the many pieces of equipment that would go a long way from the worn and secondhand equipment we use daily. As a school where baseball is not only a sport but a passion, new equipment is something of a cherished gift and will not only be treasured but put to good use.
