Our Own Supplies

My Students

I teach in a self-contained special education classroom with 12 students who spend the majority of their day with me. Each of my students has an intellectual disability that severely impacts their education. This is why they spend most of the day in my classroom; we are working on a significantly modified curriculum.

My students all come from very low-income households.

This severely impacts their day-to-day life. School is important to them because not only does it provide educational and social opportunities, but it also provides them food and shelter for a large portion of their day. This is especially relevant as the pandemic has severely impacted my students and their families.

I have ten boys and two girls, all of whom are in 9th-11th grade. They are incredible young individuals who make me smile every day. They work super hard and they are excited to learn and succeed. I am grateful to spend each one of my days with them and watch them grow.

My Project

After my last project was so successful, I realized the other areas from which my students could benefit. Due to the pandemic, we try to avoid sharing materials between students and staff. This obviously becomes difficult when we are used to having classroom drawers full of supplies for everyone to use. This project will allow each student to receive their own bag full of classroom supplies that only they will be using. I am requesting glue sticks, folders, scissors, fidgets, pencils, colored pencils, pencil pouches, tote bags and more.

Each student takes pride in their own belongings.

When students have items that belong to them, they take great care of them. Certain students are able to bring supplies from home and others are not. Students sometimes become discouraged when they compare their belongings to their classmates'. This project will prevent this comparison and instead will allow all students to have the same resources and supplies for school work and to create projects.

This project will also prevent the spread of germs among students and staff. We are constantly sanitizing, disinfecting, and cleaning our supplies. Students will continue to be diligent with cleanliness but will no longer need to worry about others' germs on the supplies they use every day.
