Our music classroom embraces the Orff-Schulwerk method of music education. Each day we sing, chant, move, play instruments, and create. My goal for my students is for them to become proficient music readers and joyful music makers who grow into adults who love and appreciate the arts.
My four hundred students come to music class excited to learn about and create music.
We are a Title I school located in a suburban area. Many of my students face challenging obstacles in their lives, but are resilient and determined to overcome them. The students attend two music classes per week. Every child in our building has a chance to perform for the public at least once, if not more times, each school year. Many of our students go on to become active musicians in middle school, high school, and in our community.
My Project
This rug will be used for every class, every day. The children will be assigned specific numbers on the rug to sit on. They will be able to quickly find their places as soon as they walk into the music room. Children who need structure will appreciate knowing exactly where to go and will know the boundaries of their own personal space. This will cut out problems associated with children who have difficulty with this and intrude on others' space. We will be able to create groups quickly and efficiently, saving our valuable class time. Assigning partners will be much easier if students have like colors or specific numbers. I can assign certain colors or numbers to specific instruments or movement groups, making it easier to track who has had a turn for each activity. The rug's bright colors will make our music classroom cheery and appealing to the children.
The carpet in our classroom is almost twenty years old.
It is very thin and uncomfortable for the children to sit on. Some children have difficulty knowing where to sit and intrude on others' space. A large carpet with colored squares and numbers will be soft and comfortable for the children to sit on, and will give them a specific place to sit during instructional time in music class.
