My Students

The world is a vast, amazing place. An amazing place that needs creative problem solvers with determination, persistence and confidence. Each child in my room knows that mistakes are valuable, attitude is everything, and we are all growing every day.

My students are true gems, including some diamonds in the rough.

However, my school strives to help all students find a way to shine. My school is a public school in a high poverty area, with a very diverse student population. There are roughly 25 languages spoken in the homes of the students. Approximately 80% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of my students come from families struggling to meet even basic needs. Yet my students eagerly come in every day, ready for new discoveries and new challenges. Because of the positive attitudes towards learning that are being fostered here, my students fight hard to excel. I want to continue to encourage these learners every step of the way with as many experiences and opportunities as possible.

My Project

Learning is not easy. As adults we know that it often takes many mistakes before success is achieved. This is not always an easy thing for children to grasp. "I can't do it" is a phrase that can derail a student's learning or love of school. Showing them how to have a growth mindset teaches them to add a simple but powerful word to that phrase by saying "I can't do it yet." It helps them learn to celebrate the struggle, and to persevere to reach their goals.

Growth mindset is very closely related to self-esteem.

A child with very little self-esteem will not perform as well as a child who believes he/she CAN and WILL. This project will provide my students with classroom posters to help motivate them, discussion activities to work through together each week, as well as books and puzzles to encourage them to take risks themselves.
