This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

After being approached by several students who were interested in gardening, we started a small after-school garden club and were able to start building our little urban garden with raised beds on a small plot on campus to help beautify our school. Our goal as we continue to grow is to find ways to become a more sustainable club. Supplies such as seeds, rootstock, seed starter trays, vermiculite, and coco coir will help us set up a much-needed seed starting station in the classroom so we can meet our sustainability goal.

With your support, our garden club and our little urban garden will get the boost they need to become sustainable.

At the beginning of this school year, many students had no idea where seeds came from. After a brief unit about harvesting seeds from homegrown vegetables, the students decided that was a way they could make sure the garden would continue from one season to the next saving some of the seeds in a seed library. Their secondary plan to become sustainable is to use any surplus seeds taken from a harvest and sell them as a fundraiser to keep our garden club going for future student gardeners. What a great business plan for sixth graders!

Our little urban garden has given our students so many life experiences they may not have had otherwise. They have learned basic skills such as planning and problem-solving, how to work together as a team, and how to compromise. They worked hard on leveling our garden plot, laying down landscape fabric, and building the raised beds. I admire their passion, creativity, and perseverance as they continue to blossom into future leaders in our community.
