My Students
Do you remember sitting in your class library and choosing your favorite books to read? Think about the confidence and sense of accomplishment you felt as you were able to read on your own for the first time. My students are learning to read at a rapid rate, and we are running out of materials.
My students attend a K-8 turnaround school in Philadelphia with high poverty and high crime rate.
Yet, my students are positive, resilient people who are on the path to college! Our room has become a close knit community where students are thoughtful and support one another. Our class is an inclusive kindergarten program with strong focus on math and reading skills, with a mission to close the achievement gap before it grows.
My Project
I want to create a library where my students are excited to go and explore new texts. We are currently running out of great leveled readers and I want to provide supplemental materials for students to retell stories and create their own. I am requesting bean bags for comfort and a storage center that would maximize the small space I have for a library since it doubles as a retelling felt board center! I have also submitted for reading wands for students to pick sight words out of favorite books. These materials will really increase my students motivation to learn independently and foster a love for reading engaging texts.
These books will also be utilized in my guided reading groups and then be sent home for a practice for an increased home-school connection. I have requested sight word rings as well for students to practice their words at home or in the library.
My students are currently on track to be reading at a mid first grade level by the end of kindergarten.
I need additional materials that challenge them and increase their motivation to read more, think critically about text, and make connections to their outside world. Your donations would provide the materials for me to accomplish my big goal!
