Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students live in a low-income area of Memphis. We are a high performing charter school that provides life skills along with a quality education for all students. We are located in a food desert so we would like to teach our students about self-sustainability and the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of their daily diet.
We will teach the students about good nutrition and how to prepare, plant, and maintain a garden that will benefit them in the future.
Each class will research what will grow in our area and plan their own garden. They will then prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and maintain it until harvest. The students will share their crop with other classes and can take home fresh fruits and vegetables for their families.
We feel that the students will become more aware about their nutrition and how it affects their health. They will also learn the responsibility of maintaining something that is their own.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
