Our Learning Adventure Part 4!

My Students

I work as a speech provider in a Title I-funded school in NY, where most students are from lower-income, immigrant, single-parent, or grandparent households. They come from many backgrounds and speak many languages. All my students are language-delayed and qualify for Special Education services.

Teaching kids with disabilities requires a lot of love, patience, and enthusiasm.

Like any other child, they want to succeed, but the learning does not come easily for my kids. Their living or learning situations are not ideal. The comfort, structure, and predictability of traditional classroom instruction are gone. My students keep showing up in my in-person or virtual classroom with smiles, happy to see their friends, ready to learn together and be kids.

My Project

There are two speech providers in our school, serving over 60 students. We are the Super Family of all shapes, colors, sizes, cultures, and abilities! We try to focus on mental health and create a healthy classroom. We try to help our students feel safe and inspired while learning in our speech room. We try to support our struggling learners and ease their anxiety and frustration with difficult tasks. We try to create an environment that is calm yet exciting at the same time for learning to take place. The new chairs would be great to keep little bodies in place and increase focus and concentration while racking their brains over the new topic or idea. The wooden board will help to learn some calming techniques, mindful breathing, and control the emotional outburst.

Despite a pandemic that turned our lives upside down, we made it this far together and we are ready to rock in the new year!
