Our school district is proposing to enrich its music education program through the introduction of a keyboard/music technology lab. Serving students across one elementary and one middle school, the district is committed to fostering an inclusive educational environment. With 12% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunches and a diverse student body including 293 White students, 22 students of more than one race, 16 of Asian descent, 68 Hispanic students, and 14 Black students, the district recognizes the importance of bridging economic gaps and promoting cultural relevance.
Currently, the music program offers general music to students from Kindergarten through 8th grade, with additional opportunities such as band and choir available from fourth grade through middle school.
Students can also audition for select ensembles, and the district's close alignment with the high school’s music program ensures continuity for students transitioning to high school. The program is staffed by dedicated professionals, including one full-time music teacher for general music and choir, and another for band direction and the elementary Gifted & Talented program.
The proposed initiative seeks a grant to procure six keyboard lab stations, incorporating the necessary equipment and technology for a comprehensive music education experience. This initiative is rooted in advancing equitable music education, embracing differentiation in the classroom, and elevating production values in ensemble recordings and videos. By integrating modern technology like electronic keyboards, the district aims to inspire creativity and composition in students across grades 5-8, while also meeting federal and state standards for music education.
