My Students

Do you remember when your teacher used to read aloud to you in elementary school? How you got sucked into the story, and felt like you were really there...seeing, smelling, hearing, feeling, and tasting, the story? I want to take my students to Wonka's Chocolate Factory by reading the book together.

My students are exuberant learners, who come to school with a smile despite the tough home situations that many of them come from.

Most of my 3rd graders walk to school each day, in a neighborhood that has had more murders than any other neighborhood in our great city of Chicago. Despite the challenges they face, my students persevere and all have goals to attend college. They are children who crave knowledge and positive relationships, and they are active learners who like to experience learning first-hand. In my 3rd grade class, the majority of my students read below grade level. It's hard to watch them yearning to read books that their peers can enjoy easily, but are too difficult for them. They often get frustrated because the books at their reading level are for younger students, and they struggle to find books that appeal to their interests at their level.

My Project

At the end of the year, when all the state testing is done and students and teachers alike are all winding down, I like to do a unit on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and infuse reading, math, social studies, and life-skills altogether. Because it is at a higher reading level than what most of my students currently read at, I will read the text aloud, while students follow along in their own books. According to Kathryn Button and Margaret Johnson, "Through shared reading, children experience and enjoy literacy texts they are not yet ready to read independently. Teachers focus on specific concepts of print and strategies of reading; teaching is often direct and explicit, but it take place within a highly meaningful context." The unit that I have planned to go along with this book also includes lessons for other content areas like math (on probability of finding a golden ticket), social studies (country studies from the various winners of Golden tickets), etc.

Your donations will ensure that my students get a chance to truly experience everything that reading this childhood classic has to offer.

They will see the machines making candy, hear the sounds of the children exploring the factory, smell the chocolate in the air, taste the sugary sweetness, and feel the joy...all without ever leaving the room. Because these books are hardcover, they will last for years to come. Not only will my class of 25 students enjoy them, but so will my future students.
