My Students

Our typical day is practicing cultural protocol which supports who they are and where they come from. I want my students to be proud of who they are by learning interviewing skills and to interview people who are significant in their lives. A Hawaiian proverb, He hulu ali'i, said to a precious elder.

We are the only public middle school on our beautiful island in Hawai'i.

THe majority of our students qualify for free or reduced cost lunches. In our program we display a strong cultural connection to our community. All of my students are Native Hawaiian students and are being educated in the Hawaiian language. The majority of my students have been educated in the Hawaiian language since preschool. Middle school students are inquisitive and I would like to embrace that attitude and build on it.

My Project

I would like my students to learn interviewing skills and techniques. They will have a choice of interviewing someone significant to them. As with every culture our Kupuna (elders) are very important. Once they have acquired all the techniques and skills of interviewing, they will interview a significant person (elder or adult), complete the interview and complete a documentary of the person. They will conduct a research project from information gathered from their significant interviewed person, i.e., area of birth place and its cultural significance and how it connects to family. Once they complete their documentary, students will present before different venues; a parent workshop, a community meeting, and at a middle school conference. My students need a camera and MacBook Air laptop to create their documentary for their interview project.

I feel with the donation I may receive from this project, students will be able to see their end product (a documentary) viewed by many, and it will give them a better sense of place, proud of who they are and where they come from by obtaining interviewing skills.

Having this type of equipment will enhance my teaching capabilities with this particular project.
