Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If you are able to read this, you can thank your first grade teacher! First grade is the time when kids really start on their path to literacy. Our goal is to help our students discover their love of reading and help them in their journey to read.
Our students are truly one of a kind.
We are an integrated co-teaching classroom. So, we are made up of general students and students with disabilities. The best thing about my students is that they love school and they love to learn. Because we are located in such a low income community, our students are faced with even more obstacles than the typical student. We do not want reading to be one of those obstacles.
My Project
Because we have students with disabilities, our lesson plans and activities are always differentiated and unique in order to provide the best education for our different types of learners. With the write & wipe sentence strips, our kinesthetic learners can practice how to write legibly. With the highlighter tape, we can segment sounds, syllables, or words in books to help our struggling readers and visual learners read more fluently. The reading tracker with be a great benefit to our students with ADHD who get overwhelmed with many words in a page.
We do not have the power to control what our students learn in their community, but we do have the power to control what they learn in our classroom community.
These items will be a stepping stone for the students to become great readers and writers and hopefully use those skills to ultimately overcome the obstacles and stigmas they live with everyday.
