This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school year is off to a bang! My new group of small scholars have been lovely to get to know. Every child has a strong, unique personality. Every student is at a different level academically. Most are Latino, and first or second generation Americans. They receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

Despite cultural and financial challenges, I know that my students can have the same growth mindset and executive functioning skills as their wealthier peers across the bay.

I am reminded of this when they tell me they love school and love learning. Students from this community are more than capable of achieving greatness, and I am excited to foster it!

My Project

My students have been begging me for a class pet. Since I'm new to the class pet realm, I want to start with a beta fish. The great thing about this aquarium we're requesting is that it acts as a miniature ecosystem. The fish eat the plant matter on top and the plants keep the water clean. This will provide my students with not only the responsibility of looking after another life, but also a science lesson on how living things help each other thrive. Since we can grow herbs on top of the fish tank, the students can use these plants to study and cook with too!

The students will get a mini-ecosystem style fish tank, a coupon for a fish, and the seeds to start growing herbs on top.

Finally, they will get a copy of National Geographic magazine, titled "Swim Fish: Explore the Coral Reef."
