My Project

Our school's English language learners are highly motivated, but they struggle to follow along with the lengthy, challenging texts we read in the general education classroom.

Fortunately, there are picture books that provide access to the same grammar, vocabulary, themes, and critical discussions.

While these books are technically as difficult as texts without illustrations, the pictures and smaller chunks of language allow even the newest language learners to begin to engage with grade-level reading.

For the students who are a bit farther along in learning English, bilingual sets and culturally responsive books help bridge from what they already know to reading independently in English.
