Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school opened in 2007, and we have never had any Advanced Placement courses. That will change in the 2015-16 school year when we will offer Advanced Placement Literature and Composition. This is a great opportunity for our students, but we need great literature for these students to read.

Ours is an inner-city school with all of the problems in urban schools.

Our attendance zone takes in some of the poorest neighbors in our city. Our students struggle with poverty, crime, gangs, drugs, and broken families. Still we are seeing real gains in their reading levels and better performance on our state tests. We have momentum going in our school, and this new Advanced Placement course will keep that momentum going. We need your help so that these students will have the kinds of books used in AP Lit courses. These books will challenge and inspire our students to see beyond their circumstances to greater opportunities ahead.

My Project

The titles I have chosen are featured in many of the AP Lit exams. They deal with themes like personal responsibility, resistance to tyranny, love, family, poverty, and oppression. My students will learn how to read deeply and think critically about the themes in these books, Antigone, Pride and Prejudice, and The Grapes of Wrath, which all have relevance today. The students will prepare themselves for college and careers by reading, analyzing and discussing these great books. In doing so, they will share other lives and widen their world-views.

Reading is the key for these students' future.

Knowing how to read well makes the difference between a career that lifts them out of poverty or a low-wage job that continues the cycle of poverty for them and their children. I have chosen books that will make their lives different. I ask your help in making this impact in their world.
