Help me give my students collections from some of our favorite authors like Mo Willems & Aaron Blabey! We love Junie B. and are excited to continue learning from appropriate and engaging nonfiction National Geographic readers.

My Students
“Children know perfectly well that unicorns aren’t real, but they also know that books about unicorns, if they are good books, are true books.” – Ursula K. Le Guin
The students in my classroom are amazing because of their capacity to simultaneously demonstrate resilience and enthusiasm.
First grade is an essential time during which knowledge and imagination intersect - the trials and tribulations of life have yet to cause turmoil and dissent from the magic of books, and children experience the world with wonder. The children in my class, who are mostly culturally and linguistically diverse, deserve to know the feeling of being transported from their uncertain lives to the stories told through the magic of words. These students learn best when they can learn by talking and discovering with each other, as they are not just learning content, they are also learning a second language.
My Project
The other day, we were reading an Elephant & Piggie book when suddenly, Elephant Gerald fell down and said "OOF!". This set our class off into a fit of giggles! Then, we wondered why it made us laugh so hard.
This project is meant to continue the passion we have for our favorite authors in our classroom.
Mo Willems has captivated our classroom, from readers who are not yet reading in text to readers above grade level. Aaron Blabey made us fall in love with Pig the Star, and now, we are hungry for more Pig the Pug stories. Junie B. Jones helps first graders develop stamina as they move along in their literacy development and begin to take on chapter books. National Geographic Nonfiction Readers help the students in my class, who are mostly culturally and linguistically diverse, build the background knowledge they need in order to succeed in and beyond the classroom. Additionally, the Shape Trilogy will introduce students to new characters to understand and stories with which to connect.
The biggest impact a book can make would be to turn a student into a lover of reading. By donating to this project you would be helping to do that for 24 incredible, hard-working, curious and deserving first graders.
