Our Favorite Quality: Bilingual-ity!

My students need to see themselves in the characters of books that highlight latino heritage, daily life, and their bilingual pride.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although I grew up in very modest and challenging circumstances, I consider my life to be immeasurably rich. ~Sonia Sotomayor All students should take pride in their heritage and home language, strengthen bonds with family, improve literacy in Spanish, and reading about characters just like them.

My students are learning in their second language; their first is Spanish, the language of their homes and relationships with family and friends.

They are dedicated to fulfilling their parents' dreams for their academic success. With support, they are able to achieve our rigorous expectations, by building stamina and grit. But through this learning, they should also see themselves in the literature they read and realize that their dreams are within their reach.

My Project

These bilingual texts share the tales of children just like them, celebrating their latino heritage and culture. The books would be used to supplement how our reading curriculum addresses reading comprehension strategies and give students the chance to fully connect with the characters! This will lead to greater engagement and boost pride in the home language and culture of our students.

Have you read a story about a character just like you?

These books will give our students the same opportunity, which they truly deserve and will be so grateful for. Imagine their eyes wide and entranced by reading about children just like them, their enthusiasm for literacy boosted by familiar words in Spanish and the opportunity to demonstrate their bilingual-ity!
