Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! If you're a first grader, seeing that title in our classroom library causes a squeal of excitement! But flimsy paperbacks haven't held up to the love these young readers have for their favorite titles, and our books are falling apart!

I teach in an urban school in an impoverished neighborhood.

All of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and many speak Spanish at home. Few of my students have books at home which makes it even more important that my students have high-quality, appropriate books to take home and read on their own or with family members.

My Project

I'm requesting hardcover copies of many of my students' favorite books, including Knuffle Bunny, David Goes to School, and Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! These books quickly become favorites because of their likable characters, simple text, and quirky illustrations. Each week, students select a baggie full of books from our library from which they'll take books home and read independently and with friends. I've tried to supply less expensive, paperback copies of these favorite titles, but they quickly fall apart, with worn covers and loose bindings. This project would beef up our library with durable, hardcover versions of these titles. More students would have access to these books, which in turn boosts reading motivation and the ability to share these books with family members and loved ones. These books should last for years to come, and will be enjoyed by my current and future classes alike.

With your donation of these favorite texts, you will enable young readers to get lost in books with David, Pigeon, and Trixie.

You'll also give students the opportunity to take these favorite characters home, to be shared with parents and siblings alike. Thank you for supporting early literacy!
